About Us

The Team:

Local Gems has been created by a Bournemouth based team passionate about creating unique, authentic experiences.

Sara Uzzell: A Chartered Marketer for over 25 years, Sara started her career in London working with agencies in market research and branding. For many years she managed major marketing projects for household names and international companies.

In 2003, Sara and her husband, Bernard, quit the rat race and bought a hotel in Bournemouth. They spent the next 15 years developing their business into two hotels, various hospitality initiatives and a tour operator firm. Their success was a result of their focus on developing packages and experiences. Sara is passionate about tourism and she loves working with other local businesses. She is a natural at encouraging collaboration and finding unique local experiences. Sara is on the board of the Dorset Tourism Association, National Coastal Tourism Academy and the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership.

As hotel owners, Sara and Bernard encouraged their guests to try different activities during their stay. They created ideas, itineraries and packages to give visitors the chance to experience exciting new things in the local area.  Sara’s ideal experiences are fossil hunting along the Jurassic coast and enjoying a local gin tasting with friends.

Dr Bernard Uzzell: Bernard is responsible for systems, processes, administration, finance and commercial matters for Local Gems. A mathematician and creative problem solver, Bernard has vast experience in strategy and project management and is a safe pair of hands with all these important jobs.  Bernard’s favourite experiences are cheese and wine pairing as well as seascape photography in Poole bay.
Gayle Stone:  Gayle is an expert in digital marketing in tourism, hotels and hospitality and manages the website and all aspects of digital marketing for Local Gems. Gayle’s perfect experiences are to have a cookery masterclass and to get expert advice on growing vegetables in her garden that she can use in her cooking.
Graham Foster: A designer and website creator, Graham has worked for leading design and branding agencies in London and is now based close to the sea in Southbourne.  Graham’s favourite experiences are taking his children to feed the lambs and to watch cheese making at a local Dorset farm.
Jason Nicholls: A big thinker and creative guru, Jason’s career started in journalism and PR. He has worked in marketing in airlines and the leisure industry and his most recent work has been in international e-commerce. Jason’s ideal experience is to be a publican for a day at a local village pub or a to go foraging with an expert in the New Forest.
Our team also has an extensive network of trusted local experts who bring their special magic to our business as and when required.
